Lessons Learned from Winter Storm Jonas

Winter Storm Jonas lived up to its record breaking forecast. With an estimated price tag of $850M worth of damage, Winter Storm Jonas was the fourth most powerful storm to ever hit the Northeast.  There were millions of power outages, coastal flooding, as well as many car accidents. During this time, there were a few reoccurring issues that can be lessons learned:

  • Many people think that working from home is easy, but it is not as easy as it sounds. Because of IT security issues, decreased productivity and loss of billable hours, resolving these issues in the midst of a storm have been proven to be useless.

  • A voice redirection plan also needs to be a priority. Being able to maintain business as usual with just one phone call and a flip of a switch is a huge advantage.

  • Remember that power is always king. It is easy to take the electricity in our officers and homes for granted, so it is easy to forget how sustainable power lines are. Some parts of the Northeast received over 20 inches of snow so it is important to know that just ¼ inch of ice can add an extra 250lbs to the power lines, making the chances of an outage much greater. Time after time, power failure is the #1 issue.

These lessons are important to know in order to be prepared for whatever lies ahead because remember, the best time to prepare is before the disaster strikes.
